Department of Pharmacogenetics


The Department was founded in 1973 within the framework of the 2nd Moscow Pirogov's Medical Institute, ever since 1986 the Department is incorporated into the Institute of Pharmacology.

The Department comprises the Laboratory of Pharmacogenetics, the Laboratory of Mutagenesis Pharmacology and Laboratory of Neuroprotection Pharmacology.

The Department is headed by professor Sergeui B. Seredenin (birthdate 1946),
academician RAMS, USSR (1980) and RF (1998) State Prizes laureate.

Professor Andrey D. Durnev (birthdate 1955) heads the Laboratory of Mutagenesis Pharmacology,

In 2002 a Chair of Pharmacogenetics of Russian State Medical University, Medical Biological Faculty (chaired by prof. Sergeui B. Seredenin) was founded on basis of the Department.

Major lines of scientific research:

  • Studies on pharmacogenetics of emotional stress responses;
  • Research and development of medications to prevent and correct the emotional stress responses given their hereditary determined phenotype;
  • Assessment of genetically controlled differences in drug metabolism;
  • Study on genetical regularities of formation and design&development of individual pharmacotherapy of alcoholism and drug dependence;
  • Evaluation of drugs mutagenic properties and elaboration of pharmacological genome protection.
